Judgments
It is important that the judgments of the courts are made publicly available, as
they form a part of the law of the land in relation to the principles they decide.
It is also imperative that they are published in a form that makes them more readily
understood and more easily accessible for purposes of research and citation in court.
These have been the objectives of the
Cayman Islands Law Reports (CILR) since they were first published in the mid-1980s. A
publication which is edited to the highest academic and professional standards, the CILR now
contain reports of the most significant cases concerning the Cayman Islands dating from 1952
(with notes of some earlier cases back to the start of the 20th century) to the present day.
Coverage is given to the modern courts—The Grand Court, The Court of Appeal and The Judicial Committee of the Privy Council—and also to Cayman cases
in their predecessor courts, the Supreme Court of Jamaica, the Court of Appeal of Jamaica and
the Federal Supreme Court.
With the advent of this web site, the reported judgments are presented in digital format
and, when it becomes possible, they will be linked with annotations to the statute law of the
Cayman Islands, to provide a modern and efficient research tool. Unreported Judgments are
also available on-line.
Hard copies of the unreported judgments and the CILR will remain available for Cayman
subscribers from the courts (please contact Mrs. Patricia Palmer in the Grand Court). The
CILR are available for overseas subscribers from the publishers in Oxford, England.
The publishers of the CILR are Law Reports International. The Editor in Chief is Alan Milner,
M.A., LL.M., Ph.D., of Gray’s Inn, Barrister; Attorney-at-Law of the Cayman Islands; Emeritus
Fellow of Trinity College, Oxford, and the Editors are members of the staff of Law Reports
International. The Production Editor is Sarah Smith, B.A. and the Consulting Editors are
Ramon D. Alberga, O.B.E., Q.C., M.A. and Colin D. McKie, M.A., Attorney at-Law.
